Bird Watching around the river Ebro

Although I (Dena) was interested in birds and general nature in the UK, it is only since I have lived here that I have become hooked on Birding! I have cut my teeth as a birder on identifying birds that many experienced birders would still love to see!

So, when I tell you that this area is a fantastic destination for birders I'm saying this as fellow birder not repeating what I've picked up from some other website!

What makes it so good?

Well, to kick off with, your accommodation is superbly situated on the riverbank which means your birdwatching can begin right from the balcony! Thanks to the reed-bed on the little river-island you may see Little Egret, Purple, Grey and Squacco heron - if you are lucky even Little Bittern. Hoopoe, Kingfisher, Black Kite, Hobby, Scops Owl and a variety of swallow and swifts are other species you may see (or hear) whilst enjoying your breakfast cuppa or your evening glass of wine! A 3 minute walk into the riverside woodland could give you, bee-eaters, golden oriole, penduline tits, cetti's warbler, sardinian warbler; even wryneck and the occasional woodchat shrike...

It's easy to see how I got the birding bug!

And further afield... ?

We are 35 minutes drive to the northern edge of the Ebro Delta (on the way you may want to stop off at a good site for Bonelli's Eagle) - but I digress - these famous wetlands are an important breeding ground and migratory stop for up to 300 species of birds - a massive 60% of all the species in Europe. Among them: Collared Pratincole, Glossy Ibis, Greater Flamingo, Red-crested Pochard, Purple Swamp Hen, Little Crake, Slender-billed Gull and around 75% of the world population of Audouins Gull.

In the mountain ranges that flank the Ebro Valley ( the Els Ports, Montsant and the Cardo, Tivissa and Llaberia ranges) not only will you admire the fabulous craggy landscape you may also see Griffon Vultures, Golden Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, as well as Cirl Bunting, Rock Bunting and Rock Sparrow.

If you want to drive North, we are less than an hour from the Lleida Steppes - these drylands are home to Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Little Bustard, Red-larked Thekla lark, Black Wheatear, Lesser Kestrel and European Roller...

All these habitats within easy reach of your accommodation!

To help you find your way around to some recommended birding sites we have a selection of birding itineraries at the apartments and I'll be more than happy to share my sightings with you. We can also arrange for you to visit a Vulture Feeding Station an awesome sight to see huge flocks of Griffon vultures and an occasional Black vulture and Egyptian vulture into the bargain!

Do come! You'll love it!
