In
this southern corner of Catalonia it is, of course, the River Ebro
that has been the greatest influence on the land. Here, on its final
stretch to the Mediterranean it cuts its way through a series of
mountains creating dramatic, craggy landscapes and a fertile, green
river valley. For the walker or cyclist this means that you can
choose from the gentler slopes of the river valley where you can
explore numerous hill villages en route and watch farmers at work in
the acres of almond, peach, pear and cherry orchards. Or you can
tackle the crags and peaks of the surrounding mountains where you may
see eagles and vultures soar overhead.
Mont Caro in the Els Ports
mountains is the highest peak in this region at 1447metres. Not by
any means the highest mountain range in Spain but to put it in
perspective this is still some 100 metres higher than Ben Nevis –
Britains highest peak. And yet in little over half an hours drive
from Mont Caro you can be on the flatlands of the Ebro Delta with its
network of lanes around the rice paddies and lagoons.
